Arabian Chotchke

I have seen many little religious chotchke type things like this, hanging from a car mirror, or hanging in people's homes.  All of them have quotes from the Quran or something along those lines.  This one actually says "Allah."

i am a yabanci here myself

there's something desperately sentimental about sitting in a room full of people exchanging letters with significant others. everyone here is really fanatical with their access to computers, fiending until they can check their mail again. it's not just this university but this whole experience which is rather isolating. at the most fundamental level it makes you question yourself, why you would come here. and what you're doing. and if you're trying to prove something. all of this forced socialization can illicit a real penetrating introspection. what sort of character do you want to convey to these strangers? because you could just as easily pretend to be someone altogether different, and these people would have no way of knowing. i am sure that most of the students here may have their suppositions about each other, but i think more prominantly, everyone is trying so hard to affect an attitude of nonchalance that not only is it impossible to know anybody, it's really impossible to want to know anybody. and anyone who puts in any effort at all to be conspicuously friendly is designed as awkward and discarded for the greater good of the group. i think the bottom line, if anyone here is anything like myself, is that i would rather just rid myself of the stress than worry about whether im not only putting enough energy in meeting new people, but also in being approachable.

which is all beside the point when you look like you're on your death bed. i was doing better yesterday but today i'm kind of feeling shitty again. i really can't be expected to care about anything except that. today after school i'm gonna have to go to real to get my camera cleaned, and get some more minutes for my phone. ah, the effort.

Kumkani set the shine at Soweto Wine festival

Soweto braces itself for the long anticipated annual Standard Bank Soweto Wine Festival . The City of Johannesburg websites indicates that some of the country's finest wines will be on show at the Wine Festival. City of Johannesburg website

More than 100 wineries will be taking part in the Standard Bank Soweto Wine Festival, together bringing more than 850 wines to the show.
Now in its fourth year, the festival is being held at the University of Johannesburg's Soweto Campus on the evenings of 5 and 6 September.

Brands like Kumkani, the king of South African wines, Versus and Thandi are some of the quality wines that will be present at the Wine festival.

Kumkani has won numerous medals local and international competitions this year, such as the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, Swiss International Airline Awards, the International Wine Challenge and the Sélections Mondiales des Vins Canada.

Kumkani winemaker, Nicky Versfeld, said: “Creating a winning wine doesn’t require a secret recipe – it’s simply a combination of terroir, and teamwork between the grower, viticulturist and winemaker. By doing the basic things right and paying attention to detail from the vineyard to the bottling process, we ended up with a unique wine, namely the Kumkani Lanner Hill Sauvignon Blanc.”

Visitors are welcome to visit our stalls and taste the award winning wines

Fried potatoes museum in Belgium

Absolutely incredible!  Up until now there was no Frietmuseum in the whole  Europe, which means that the Frietmuseum in Bruges is the first and only museum dedicated to potato fries.Together with delicious Belgian chocolate, the Belgian potato fry is certainly the product that is the most characteristic of Belgian culinary expertise.  Over the years, fries have become known world wide to the delight of adults and children in practically all countries and we can be proud that they actually originate from Belgium. Therefore, it is not only normal, but even absolutely necessary that the first potato fry museum should be opened in Belgium. The questions most frequently asked are: “Where does the potato come from?”, “Was the fry invented in Belgium?”and “What is the secret of making good fries?”The Frietmuseum  in Bruges gives the answers to all these questions and many more. This educational museum is housed in the Saaihalle, one of the most beautiful buildings in Bruges, which increases its attraction to tourists even more.  It explains the history of the potato and fries and the different condiments with which they are habitually served. The Bruges Chip Museum, or Het Frietmuseum, is open every day from 10 am to 5 pm.On the ground floor you can learn about the fascinating history of the potato which originated in Peru more than 10,000 years ago.On the first floor, the visitor can discover the history of the fries and how they came to Belgium and in the basement of the building, in the medieval cellars, it is even possible to sample some. The Frietmuseum completes the choice of museums in harmony with all the others which the town of Bruges has to offer and allows the visitor to discover the origins of one of the greatest Belgian culinary specialities, of which we are very proud: potato fries. The museum was created by the families Cédric and Eddy Van Belle who also created in Bruges the Belgian chocolate museum, Choco-Story, and the domestic lighting museum, Lumina Domestica.

Caterpillar D Series

The CAT (Caterpillar) 420D and 430D backhoe loaders
are the high performance machines in the D series
lineup. The 420D boasts 85 HP and a backhoe digging
depth of 14 feet when equipped with a standard
stick.

The 430D offers 94 HP and a backhoe digging depth
of 15 feet when it is equipped with a standard
stick. By using an extendible stick, you can
push the digging depth of the 420D to 18 feet and
the depth of the 430D to 19 feet, which is very
impressive to say the least.

Both D series machines are available in IT
(Integrated Toolcarrier) configurations for
applications that benefit from a parallel lift
loader linkage and the versatility of quick work
tool changes through the use of a versatile
hydraulic quick coupler. Applications include the
use of pallet forks, material handling arms,
brooms, and even buckets.

The new and improved pilot operated hydraulic backhoe
and IT loader controls will help to ensure smooth,
precise operation with reduced effort on behalf of
the operator. These backhoes use excavator type
joystick controls, and an optional pattern change
valve which allows you to select the patern of
control.

The 205 degree rotation that is offered by the
backhoe bucket linkage will make it easier to dig
vertical walls and clamp material when loading
trucks. The rotation with the D series is 40
degrees more than with the C series. Now, the
backhoe buckets feature a single pin position,
with the bucket link featuring an integrated
lifting eye as well.

The optional quick coupler you can get for the
backhoe will allow fast changes of working tools
for increased versatility and flexibility in
almost all applications.

Both of the D series backhoe loaders use the
turbocharged, direct injection, four cylinder diesel
engine, with a displacement of 4.0 liters. This
engine offers superior lug performance which is
mostly due to the responsive fuel injection
system.

The standard power shuttle transmission provides
four forward speeds and four speeds in reverse
as well. Fully synchromesh in all gears will
permit on the go shifting, while the forward and
reverse electric power shuttle will provide
instant direction changes through powered
clutches.

The auto shifting feature will automatically
shift between second gear and the highest gear
selected for ease of operation. The auto shift
feature has five forward and three reverse gears,
with a transmission kick switch on the lever of
the loader control.

With D series loaders, you'll also have the choice
of standard two wheel drive or all wheel drive,
which you can engage easily on the go, under
heavy load, by pressing a switch that is located
on the front console.

The D series loaders from CAT are very fast and
versatile as well, as they will move faster than
most types of backhoes on the market. The
diesel engines are very fast, while the machine
has enough traction and control to keep you
moving even in wet or muddy conditions.

The variable load sensing hydraulic system will
adjust the flow and pressure of the machine to
meet the demands of work with an increased
pressure of 3,300 PSI. The hydraulic system is
tuned to work efficiently with the engine, and
it provides full hydraulic force to the working
tool on hand at any engine speed you desire.

Unlike other backhoe loaders, the D series will
reduce demands on the operator, cut fuel consumption
in half, reduce wear on the engine, and allow
for quieter operation. To make a long story
short - the D series from CAT are among the best
backhoe loaders that money can buy - bar none.

is today freaky friday?

Walking to the metro this morning, I passed the American Embassy and along the road (opposite the White House, not Novinski Blvd) there was a whole caravan of minibuses with OMOH personnel/soldiers. One of the buses was labeled "Medical Services," but I didn't notice anything for the others. Some of the guys were standing outside playing up Russian stereotypes by doing nothing but smoking cigarettes and ogling the female passersby. I have no idea what they could possibly be doing. Surely with everything going on in Georgia, there isn't some kind of joint exercise with Uncle Sam in progress.

I also saw an old woman working out of a repair stall, possibly for shoes although I couldn't tell from where I was. That in itself is nothing unusual. What struck me that her stall was a (hopefully) disused port-a-potty. Of course with rents being what they are in this fair city, I'm sure she still has to pay the equivalent of $1500/mo for her "office".

Once I actually got to the metro station and inside the car to that undisclosed location where I was headed, I noticed a stray dog just casually exiting the train and walking into the station. It stopped for a moment, presumably to figure out where the exit or transfer point was. I hope it made it to wherever it was going, but I'm curious how much it had to pay for the privilege. Perhaps not being human gives one some sort of discount from the kindly babushkas sitting at the ticket counters.

All in all, a very strange but highly amusing morning.

Oh, if anyone can tell me what the function of OMOH is, I'd appreciate it.
